<image:caption>Friends of Lake Five, Inc. (FLFI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit located in Flathead County, Montana. Formed in 2020 we have a 5 member board made up of all volunteers. The mission of the corporation is to protect, preserve and restore environmental water quality of Lake Five, West Glacier, Montana and surrounding wildlife habitat, wetlands, tributary rivers and streams and the Lake Five watershed for the public, through education, research support, institution and maintenance of environmental litigation. Friends of Lake Five is partnering with organizations to conduct research on water quality, wetlands and wildlife. FLFI will use the compilation of scientific data to then educate the public about the environmental quality of Lake Five. Our organization aims to defend Lake Five’s ecology and wildlife so future generations will have it to enjoy.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - About Lake Five</image:title>
<image:caption>Lake Five is an 151 acre lake just outside of Glacier National Park. Lake Five is known for its scenic beauty and it’s clear, spring fed water. The area acts as a crucial wildlife corridor and wintering habitat for elk and deer. Lake Five was settled in the early 1900’s, several families homesteaded in the area. There was a sawmill that was built next to the railroad in order to load and unload the timber and supplies needed. At one time it was estimated that the mill employed about seventy-five men. A six-foot wide flume was dug between Half-Moon Lake and Lake Five so that logs could easily be floated between the lakes to the mill. A post office was established on the hill above the railroad tracks in 1920. The post office operated until 1928. The Lake Five area was badly damaged by the 1929 fire, resulting in many of the local residents losing their homesteads and being forced to leave. The area that was damaged by the 1929 wildfire has recovered into the stunning landscape you see today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>FLFI has partnered with Whitefish Lake Institute and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to participate in the Northwest Montana Lakes Volunteer and Monitoring Network Program (NWMTLVMN). Our citizen scientist volunteers will monitor the water quality and identify and report Aquatic Invasive Specie (AIS) for Lake Five. Through this program lake data will be collected to report the health of the lake. Data collected in this program will provide resource managers and community group’s information to help make educated decisions regarding water quality and wildlife issues. FLFI is also lunching a similar study with the University of Montana’s Flathead Lake Biological Station.</image:caption>

<image:title>Initiatives - Wildlife</image:title>
<image:caption>Lake Five is nestled in a thriving wildlife corridor in Flathead County, Montana. The area is home to a diverse group of animals who depend on the lake, surrounding streams and wetlands to survive. One of the most unique specimens is the Common Loon. FLFI is partnering with the Montana Loon Society to study the Loon population and feeding areas on and around the Lake. The United States Forest Service has appointed the common loon a species of special status because of threats from habitat damage and toxic metal poisoning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Initiatives - Wetland and Tributary Streams</image:title>
<image:caption>Lake Five is also home to distinctive Wetlands. Wetlands are a crucial part of the lakes’ environment. They not only protect the shores from wave action they also absorb pollutants and improve the water quality. Adjacent streams and wetlands to Lake Five are endanger of development and lack of protection. Our organization plans to study these wetlands to learn how to better protect them.</image:caption>
